they are VERY kind and gentle dogs.
might want to keep little children away,
because their size is TREMENDOUS.
but they are a good loyal pet.
I owned a Great Dane, she was the best dog I ever had. My girl was sick when I got her, but we shared 9 years of happiness together before she passed away this past December. I did not have a autopsy done, but she had been to the vet , had all her shots, but I woke up to find that she had died in her sleep. To me 9 years is a short time to have a dog, I know that large breeds have shorter life spans then smaller dogs, there are traits that seem to follow certain breeds, but I have learned that dogs are a lot like people, you just never know what tomorrow may bring. They are wonderful dogs, I reccomend Obedience training, it is a must, 50% for the owner and 50% for the dog. You also need to socialize them and love them. Keep them on a good food, check with a vet that knows large breeds and remember that they need and deserve the best care, if you aren't prepared for a large dog and can't afford to give them what they need, don't buy one, it's not fair to the dog and as to being around children, teach the children about the breed, how to approach them and never let them be around them alone until you are satisfied that you have trained them well, their size alone can injure a small child and they are playful and may forget their size. Read all you can about the breed, visit a breeder with pups and get to know them and what they are about before you purchase one. And the best advice is to buy from a reputable breeder, better to spend the money and get a healthy pup then to try and save money and buy problems. I LOVE the breed and would love to have more.

We had 2 great danes at the same time. They are very kind dogs but I would not trust them with young children like most other dogs. Our dogs were bad about killing cats that we had around and would bring in a duck or a chicken if someone had them in the neighborhood. They are large dogs that require lots of dog food. We enjoyed our great danes because they were so friendly and loved people so much.
The Great Dane is a gentle giant. Dignified, kind, sweet and affectionate, it is playful and patient with children. It loves everyone and needs to be around people. The Great Dane does not bark much and only becomes aggressive when the circumstances require it. A steady dog, responsible and dependable. Brave and loyal, it is a good watchdog. Because of his giant size, the Great Dane should be thoroughly obedience trained when young so it will be manageable when fully grown. Teach this giant dog not to lean against people, especially children. The objective in training this dog is to achieve a pack leader status. Not a long lived breed. Be careful to buy from a conscientious breeder, as some very poor specimens are being sold to the unsuspecting public. Beware of hip dysplasia; buy only from OFA certified stock. Also prone to bloat, tumors, heart disease, and tail injuries. Do not jog with this dog until it is at least one year old. The Great Dane needs plenty of exercise. They need to be taken on a daily long walk.
i have never owned a great dane but i have done plenty of reseach because i hope to own one in the future.....
Well they are very costly as to their huge size, and health problems. Other than that i think they are awesome :) But they are really hard to control for first dog owners. :/
You have been given some good info but also a lot of misinformation......well bred Danes are NOT prone to health issues, they are far less likely to have hip issues then Labs, Goldens, GSD and other breeds, they also aren't shortlived..the average is 10 years the same as for other large.giant breeds and many live well into their teens if well bred and well cared for.
They are good dogs, aren't hyper, don't require a lot of exercise and can live very well in apartments or small houses. They are very smart and easily trained. They are a gaint breed of dog so it is costly to do spay/neuters, heartguard, frontline compared to other breeds.
If well bred, properly socialized and properly trained they are wonderful with small children and other animals.
Great care must be taken to buy only from responsible breeders who do health testing, breed for health, longevity, temperament and breed standard.
I think everything about the breed is wonderful except for that they can drool, have many health problems, and don't live very long.
We own one and I never again will I not have a Great Dane laying around the house!
She's goofy and submissive, a real people-pleasure, LOVES kids and all people for that matter, and isn't dog aggressive at all. She was immediately good in the car, too. It's like she can read our minds.
She's only 13 weeks old now and already she knows ';go pee';, ';sit';, ';down';, ';stay';, ';come';, ';paw'; (with both paws), and when we call her name we've trained her to come and look us right in the eye so we can give her a command.
Truly, they are wonderful. Don't get a puppy though with the little kids. Even though the breed is lazy, all puppies are active. Maybe get an older dog from a breeder?
I think this would be a great breed for your kids to grow up with. People say all the time don't trust dogs with kids, but this is the only breed I would leave my children unsupervised with, and that's saying something! I will purposely pull her tail, grab her weird, etc. just to see her reactions, and she just calmly turns her head at me and continues on her merry way!
Good luck!
