I think my 15 year old son may be anorexic, Advise?

Over memorial day my son and i and my husband went to the beach. And well my son's ribs were showing. And that concerned me and my husband. He eats maybe once a day if that, and all he will drink is water. When we got home my husband and i tried to talk to him but he just flipped out and told us everything was fine. Advise?I think my 15 year old son may be anorexic, Advise?
Hi Julie,

Both you and his father must be really concerned with this at the moment. Has he had a growth spurt recently? It could be that he has remained the same weight but has just gone much taller. I sympathise with you but by trying to talk to him regarding this directly, you will just make him react as he did. So what can we do here? What about bargaining with him? Ask him if he would go get a check up and if the doctor says he is fine, you will let the whole conversation drop. Also tell him that as he is growing his body needs more food to support him, tell him that this does not necessarily mean that he has to load it full of rubbish but he needs 3 meals a day,

If your son will not go to the doctor - at 15 he really has no choice seeing as he is still a minor - conact them yourself and go along. Explain your worries to the doctor and take it from there.

Don't demand anything of your young man at this point, just mention it a couple of times a week, eventually you will get him to talk to you.

My son was the opposite, ate one meal a day and his weight ballooned. Slowly, I got through to him by explaining that his body thought he was starving it and so was storing the food he took in. The only way it could store the food was to turn it to fat. It had taken 12 months of happening to just mention it every week or so, but slowly he started to eat more until he was on 3 meals a day. Since this time he has lost about 5 stone in weight and is looking really well.

Another thing I did was to keep offering different foods to try that we would not normally have in or make lots of favourite foods. I made sure there was always something to nibble on or have as a snack.

Also have you considered that he may have been bullied at school, or perhaps he has overheard someone saying how good someone else looks and compared himself with them. Try giving the school a ring and making sure that everything is ok there. Is he worrying about exams etc, what about his physical health, is that as good as usual? Does he exercise more than usual?

I would def go to the doctor and see what advice you can get there, and also just mention weight, food etc 'in passing' sort of thing. Try not to pressure him into discussing this and then I am sure he will offer an explanation soon.

Good luck, I wish you and your family a beautiful, happy and peacefilled future :-)I think my 15 year old son may be anorexic, Advise?
People who have eating disorders normally do ';flip'; out when confronted. They normally do not admit even to themselves that they have a problem because to themselves they are ';Fat';.

Your Son needs to go to your family Dr and he can make the determination if you Son is indeed below healthy standards. He probably won't even admit to your Dr if he is anorexic but there are tell tale signs that a Dr can usually catch. If he believes he is he will probably refer your Son to a psychiatrist or psychologist for further help. If you catch this problem early enough there is treatment available. If your Son is anorexic he will need your love and support to overcome this disease. Good luck.

Peace, Love %26amp; Happiness
Take him out to dinnerrr: Applebee's, 99, Longhorn's.. That happened to me.. I'm 14, and last year I got my heart broken and it's not that I didn't want to eat, but I was in complete pain and I was depressed and something happened so that whenever I smelled food I got nauseous and I just didn't eat for dayyys. Every time I tried to take a bite of something I couldn't find myself to finish it. And my Dad brought me to Applebee's and I ate something. After that I started eating little and little and after about a week or so I was back to normal.
Yes Anorexic does happen to boys too.

Check to see what is the normal weight for his age and height.

If its under, get him to a doctor for a checkup. Also, a psychologist might be needed.

Your son might not like it, but you both need to be very firm about this.

R
I saw a special about this on the BBC called ';I'm a Boy Anorexic'; that might provide some help. There were 3-4 boys profiled. You might check the BBC website to see if it will be coming on again.

Here is the link for it:

try talking to his best friend?? because your son might of confided in him about it. that could help. just sit down and explain the the kid that you're really concerned and that your son's health is in danger. if he's a good friend he'll try to help in any way
He might need some real help.

By now he's probably aware that you guys are on to whatever he's doing.

He'll try to hide it.

Although it could be because of drugs..

If he is that kind of kid...
You could ask him why he eats so little and if he's afraid of gaining weight or how he sees himself or something. Boys can be anorexic.
well the sudden freak out says everything is not ok. He might being teased at school and feels he needs to look perfect and skinny. I think u should try sitting down with him one on one that will help.
Take him to the doctor immediately!
